Happy Fourth of July

With today being the July 4th, this is the day that all Americans celebrate Independence Day which is also fondly referred to as the ‘Fourth of July’.

It is the anniversary of the publication of the declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776.
Americans around the globe tend to mark the occasion with a day of family celebrations including picnics and barbecues, whilst showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom.
There are many activities and events that are associated with the event including eating competitions, baseball games, three-legged races and other such sporting past times.
It is quite common that people will display the American flag outside their houses, buildings and places of work, with many communities coming together for an arranged firework display which are more often than not accompanied by some patriotic music. Independence day is a very patriotic holiday and The Statute of Liberty is a national monument that is associated with it.

Whether you are attending a Fourth of July party, hosting your own or fancy marking the occasion in your own way, we have put together some Fourth of July recipes for you to enjoy and get yourself in the U.S spirit.

Happy Canada Day

July 1st sees the National Day of Canada, a holiday which is for celebrating the anniversary of July 1st 1867 where three colonies united together to form a single country called Canada.

So whilst Canadians across the globe celebrate the birthday of their country we thought we’d look at some of the most awesome things that Canada has given us:

  1. Dan Ackroyd – The film world just wouldn’t be the same without the legendary dude who starred in greats such as ‘Blues Brothers’, ‘Ghostbusters’ and of course the fabulous ‘Coneheads’
  2. Blackberry – Can we imagine the world of business gadgetry and smartphones without Blackberry? It has transported the way we can conduct business on the go and also provided us with the much loved socialising tool of Blackberry Messager (BBM).
  3. Michael J Fox – An inspirational spokesperson for Parkinson’s Disease and another film legend! We’ve all been in love with Marty McFly since the 80’s and quite rightly so.
  4. Wonderbra – The invention of the Wonderbra is something that both Women and Men are thoroughly thankful for. It is a staple of many a ladies underwear drawer for that quickly added sex appeal and curvaceousness and well I think we all know why the men folk are pleased with the invention.
  5. Nathan Fillion – On behalf of geeks and Firefly fans everywhere we salute you Captain Mal! O and who could forget his rather creepy bad guy persona Caleb who gave Buffy Summers a run for her money.
  6. Java Programming Language – Invented by Canadian James Gosling – no relation to Ryan 😉 – Java is the pillar of the Android operating system and the internet and tech world wouldn’t be the same without it.
  7. Pamela Anderson – One for the guys, the ever beautiful Ms Anderson hails from Canada too and took red swim suits to a whole new level! ‘I’ll be ready…’
  8. Peanut Butter – this is something that I personally will be eternally grateful for. It’s one of the most important food innovations of all time and Yum, Yum Yummy!! 😀 It was first patented by Canadian Marcellus Gilmore Edson in 1884 and is enjoyed worldwide.
  9. John Candy – Incredible and legendary actor of the big screen who brought us such amazing classics as Home Alone, Spaceballs, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and my personal favourite Uncle Buck.
  10. Ryan Gosling – No explanation is needed, we need only to say ‘Thank You Canada, we are eternally grateful’.

Wishing you all a happy Canada Day!

This delicious recipe will make around 20 Vanilla flavoured cake pops:

Cake Pop Recipe:

Vanilla Cake:

  • 120g of Softened Unsalted Butter
  • 150g of Unrefined Caster Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 free range eggs – at room temperature
  • 180g of Self Raising Flour
  • 4 tbsp of milk – at room temperature

Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting:

  •  80g of Softened, Unsalted Butter
  • 40g of Softened Cream Cheese
  • 200g of Sifted Icing Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Extra Items:

  • Candy Melts  – in your preferred colours to decorate the cake pops
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Lollipop Sticks

Vanilla Cake Method:

  1.  Preheat your oven to 180oC/Gas Mark 4
  2. Lightly grease and flour a 25cm round or 20cm square cake tin.
  3. Cream the butter and the sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, once thoroughly mixed add the vanilla extract to the creamed butter and sugar and mix in.
  4. One at a time, add the eggs ensuring that you mix well between each addition. Add half of the flour and then half of the milk and mix until fully combined. Repeat again with the rest of the flour and milk.
  5. Pour the mixture into your already prepared tin and bake for about 35-45 mins, or until a cocktail stick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
  6. Once baked, remove the cake from tin and leave to cool on a wire rack.

Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting Method:

  1. Cream the butter and cream cheese together
  2. gradually add the sugar and continue to cream until light and fluffy.
  3. finally mix in the vanilla
  4. refrigerate for about 30 mins before using.

Candy Pops Construction Method:

  1. Crumble the cake thoroughly in a large mixing bowl, using your hands can create a finer crumb although you can use your food processor if you wish. It might be worth noting also that the crusts of the cake if left on when crumbing may create lumps in your mixture and so removing then with a sharp knife first is something to consider.
  2. Once the cake has been crumbled as finely as possible, take your fristing, a heaped tablespoon at a time and being mixing it in with the crumbs
  3. It may be that you do not need all of the frosting, this will depend upon hjow moist your cake is, so take care to add just a little at a time.
  4. Keep mixing until you have a fudge-like texture. To see if it’s ready, squeeze a little of the mixture in your palm, it shouldn’t crumble but it should be pliable.
  5. Please note that by adding too much frosting the mixture will become soggy, sticky and heavy and the cake pops will just fall off the sticks when you dip them.
  6. Wrap your mixture in cling film and refrigerate for about an hour. Remember the mixture should be firm but not too hard to work with.
  7. Break off a small pieces of the mixture at a time about the size of a ping pong ball, shape with your hands each piece in the shape of a cube, placing each of them of a tray lined with baking paper. Refrigerate for a further 15-20 mins or long enough so that they are firm.
  8. Whilst, they are chilling make up your candy melts.
  9. Place the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl – make sure that you separate all the different colours you wish to use into different bowls. Place the bowl in the microwave on medium for 1 minute.
  10. take the candy melts out and stir thoroughly, they may have only just started to melt, place them back in the microwave and melt for a further 30 seconds.
  11. Stir again, making sure that you scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl. Return to the microwave for a final 30 seconds, then give the mixture a final stir. Candy Melts does not normally achieve the same silky, runny consistency that you would get with melted chocolate, so to make it easier to work with, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil per 400g bag of candy melts. Work enough oil into the candy to create a silky consistency.
  12. Take your cake cubes out of the fridge and then taking your lollipop sticks one at a time, dip the end of the stick into the candy melts and immediately push the stick about half way through the dough cube, ensuring that it isn’t too deep or shallow. Leave on the tray for the candy to set which should only take about 1 or 2 minutes.
  13. Once all the sticks are set in place, you can now decorate them to look like your favourite social media themes using the rest of the melted candy.
  14. for the main colour of the candy, ensure there is enough melted dip in the bowl so that you don’t need to tilt it and can fully tip the mixture into the candy to coat it. Repeat with all your cake pops.
  15. Once this layer has been set you can use the end of lollipop sticks or unused/clean paintbrushes to decorate them up with your favourite logos and themes.

We hope you have a fantastic Social Media Day, whether you are attending a patru ort hosting one and remember to share your experiences with #SMDAY

We all know that when fancy dressing, painting your face and adding prosthetics etc is such a great way to make your costume more lifelike and give it that extra added edge, well this woman has taken it to a level all of her own! Recreating herself into famous faces, this is most definitely worth a look.I just wish I had this lady as part of my make up kit for before every fancy dress party.

Game of Thrones Inspired Recipes

And so, the end is near and we face the finale of Game of Thrones Season 4 and we are absolutely gutted.

With a heavy heart we tune in tonight to see what other chaos writer George R R Martin is intending to rain on the residents of Westeros and the cities across the narrow sea.

Will our questions be answered? – Will Arya escape the Hound? Will our favourite Lannister have his clever, witty and sharp minded noggin removed from his body? And will Sam be right? Will Mance really flay and boil Jon Snow alive? – Or will we be left on the edge of a torturous cliff hanger? If any of the previous episodes and seasons are anything to go by, I think we all know the answer to that.

So instead of getting all glum, why not throw a season finale party and celebrate a fantastic series with some of these Game of Thrones inspired recipes:

1. Hot Pie’s Direwolf Bread:

Let’s not lie, as soon as we saw the direwolf shaped bread that Hot Pie gave to Arya in Season 3 we all wanted to try one, and now we can! The following recipe will allow you to bake around 3 direwolves 😉

  • 2 cups of course wholemeal flour
  • 3 cups of fine wholewheat flour
  • 1.tsp baking soda
  • 1.tsp baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 6 tbs. butter
  • 4 tbs. honey
  • Buttermilk
  • 1 Beaten egg or Milk (For coating the top before baking)

  1. Preheat your oven to the moderate temperature of Gas Mark 4/180oC/350oF.
  2. Combine all the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Then rub in the butter, until the mixture forms a small breadcrumb texture.
  4. Add the honey and stir until completely mixed in, pour in some buttermilk but only enough so that you are left with a soft and workable dough. Be careful not to make the mixture too sticky.
  5. Place to the dough on a floured board/worktop and roll it out into around 1/2” thickness and then carefully with a sharp knife cut into the shape of the direwolf.
  6. When happy with your individual bread pieces, transfer them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment/greaseproof paper.
  7. Brush all over with the beaten egg or milk and place in the preheated oven.
  8. Bake for roughly 20 mins or until golden brown.

2. Sweet Jars of Wildfire:

Reminiscent of the night that the whole of Kings Landing was glowing eerily green with wild fire and Tyrion embraced his inner warrior this simple dessert recipe is very easy although very effective:

What You’ll Need:

  •  Small masonry topped jars
  • Green Jelly (Hartley’s Lime Jelly is a rather good choice)
  • Labels with ‘Wild Fire’ written on them

  1.  Follow the instructions on your chosen packet of green jelly to melt down your jelly into a measuring jug.
  2. Once your jelly is in a liquid format, pour the mixture into your small masonry topped jars.
  3. Once your jars have been filled, ensure that the outside of the bottle is completely dry before adding your ‘Wild Fire’ labels to the outside.
  4. Once your jars are completed place in the fridge to set the jelly, and take out just before serving

3. Creamcakes of Dorne

To commemorate our late and valiant Prince ‘Red Viper’ Oberyn of Dorne, why not sit down and indulge in a Dornish inspired creamcake:

Ingredients required for Pastry:

  •  3 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • ¼ cup of warm water
  • A pinch of Saffron

Ingredients required for Filling:

  • 2 cups of single cream
  • 4 eggs
  • Pinch of Cardamom
  • Pinch of Cinnamon
  • 56.7g/2oz of butter
  • 1 tsp. rose water
  • 2 tbs. icing sugar for dusting
  • Garnish with crushed pistachios or candied fruits, whichever you prefer

Method for Making the Pastry:

  1. Mix the flour and sugar together in a bowl.
  2. Place the warm water in a measuring jug and add the pinch of saffron to it for about 5 minutes, or long enough until the water has taken on a slight yellow tint.
  3. Once the water is ready, pour a small amount at a time into the flour and sugar mixture, combining and kneading until you have a large ball of dough in your bowl.
  4. Place the dough ball on a floured board or surface and roll out to about a ¼” thickness and cut the mixture into 2” in diameter rounds.
  5. Press each of these rounds into a greased and floured, mini muffin pan and bake for around 5 minutes at Gas Mark 4/180oC/350oF.
  6. Remove from the pan and leave them to cool.

Method for the Filling:

  1. Combine the cream and one beaten egg into a medium sized saucepan.
  2. Slowly bring the mixture to a simmer.
  3. In a separate bowl beat the remaining three eggs.
  4. Whisk the eggs quickly whilst gradually pouring in about 1 cup of the cream and egg mixture.
  5. When fully whisked and the entire mixture back into the saucepan adding the spices, butter and rose water and place on a medium heat stirring as it thickens.
  6. Once it has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool.

Method for Completing the Creamcakes:

  1. Spoon the filling into the prepared shells.
  2. Dust the top with icing sugar
  3. Top with your garnish of choice.

Here in the Fancy Crafting office we will be preparing these recipes and then settling down in front of the tellybox to see how season 4 climaxes, and we surely won’t let the prospect of waiting until next year for out next batch of episodes get us down.

However, we would like to say that should anyone need us over the next 6 months we will be cocooned in our duvets, watching reruns of old episodes whilst reciting the vows of the Nights Watch 😉

‘Night gathers, and now my watch begins.

It shall not end until my death.

I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children.

I shall wear no crowns and win no glory.

I shall live and die at my post.

I am the sword in the darkness.

I am the watcher on the walls.

I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn,

The horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men.

I pledge my life and honour to the Night’s Watch, for the night and all the nights to come.’
